The road to Freedom Riders

The Freedom Riders Motorcycle Association of Northern Ontario was formed on February 19, 1989, shortly after the Bikers' Rights Organization (B.R.O.) Sudbury ceased operations. Incorporated on March 13, 1989, the club was briefly known as Northern Thunder before quickly changing its name to Freedom Riders. Jim Macleod was our founding president, and in its inaugural year, the club proudly boasted 56 members. Notably, Gord Bailey holds the unique distinction of being the only member to have belonged to B.R.O., Northern Thunder, and the Freedom Riders.

Traditions and community spirit

From our earliest days, the Freedom Riders have embraced community involvement. Each season, we proudly participated in both the Garson and Sudbury Santa Claus parades, showcasing a float fully decorated and adorned with motorcycles. This cherished tradition continues today with our enthusiastic participation in the Sudbury Santa Claus Parade every March. For many years, the club also hosted an annual fundraising BBQ at the Val Est Loeb's grocery store in Val Caron, alongside our popular Poker Run and a "Steak 'n' Beans" event. Since 1994, the Freedom Riders have proudly held their Annual Freedom Rally at the Mine Mill.

Making a difference in our community

Freedom Riders Sudbury is deeply committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need, especially children. While our early focus included various community events, our mission to keep kids warm has become a cornerstone of our efforts. Through dedicated fundraising and the incredible support of our members and the wider community, we strive to ensure that no child in Northern Ontario faces the harsh winters without proper attire. Our proudest moments are seeing the positive impact of our work firsthand and knowing we are contributing to a warmer, safer community for our youth.

"The dedication of the Freedom Riders to our community, especially their work for children, is truly inspiring."
